EMERGENCY LESSON PLANS FOR MUSIC SUB – Appropriate for Grades 2 thru 8

1. Have student help you peruse the seating chart and see who’s absent. The seating chart book is on the music stand, and it also has the schedule on the front cover. Discipline rules are posted. Announce immediately that there will be detention for any student that doesn't follow directions as per Mr. Traylor.

2. Have a student help lead the Prayer of St. Cecelia at the beginning of class.

3. Please keep track of time via the schedule in the seating chart book.

4. Adapt the lesson plan for students, as necessary. Keep them learning.

Student helpers will assist you in passing out class materials. For the first project, students will need a pencil with an eraser, Note Name Sheet, and the Canbells Music Puzzle. For the second project, notebook paper (provided by the student) will be needed.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS (as they finish each project):

First project: Using the treble clef note name sheet, solve the "Canbells" musical puzzle.

Second project: The musical alphabet is letters A thru G. On your notebook paper, write out words that use only the letters A thru G in the spelling. Think of as many words as you can, and make sure you know the meaning. Feel free to use a dictionary or thesaurus via smartphone or hard copy. Two students can work together quietly. Pick your favorite 10 words to use in a story.

(Students will need treble clef staff paper for the third project.)

Third project: On notebook paper, write a story that uses the words that you listed in the second project. However, instead of writing the words in the story. Write the words on the treble clef staff via note names. Whole notes representing the note names seem to be the easiest to draw accurately. Make sure the missing words are numbered in your story (you need ten) and match them with your staff paper whole note words. Be neat in your drawing. You can use the "Canbells" story as a template, if needed. I encourage wacky, silly stories. Be creative.

(Students will need bass clef staff paper for the fourth project.)

Fourth project: On the bass clef staff, use your treble clef words and convert them into bass clef words. Make sure the numbers match. You have ten words to draw via whole notes. Be neat.
